Kairopoiesis beckons us to reflect upon the intricacies of existence, and to embrace the impermanence of the present moment.
The series unfolds like an intriguing narrative, wherein invisible layers from the artist's recent past gracefully beckon to the present moment of creation, adding an element of transcendence to each brush stroke.
Kairopoiesis is an ongoing series of over 100 paintings that emerged during the COVID pandemic. Inspired by hitsuzendo (筆禅道), this collection delves into the mysteries of intuitive presence, seeking to unravel the significance of fleeting moments.

Amidst the lockdown, I found myself without a physical studio, prompting a shift towards digital creation.
The series began as a simple exercise in quick sketching, with each painting taking shape within a concise 20-minute timeframe. I would create five separate layers within a single document, painting one layer at a time while concealing the previous one from view.
In response to what so many of us experienced—human connection through digital screens—I wanted to explore different modalities for presenting this work. The exploration was possible because the work was digital. What I originally viewed as a deficiency—i.e. digital painting isn't "real" painting—became a gateway to free exploration.
Revisiting the roots of my practice in action painting and gestural abstraction, I let go of the artifact and embraced process. I ventured into the realm of new media, offering these digital paintings as a means of mindful practice. Through readily available and free technology, I live streamed various paintings as they were rendered in real time.
The animations bring these digital works to life in a new way. Inspired by Rothko Chapel, I invited viewers to immerse themselves in a contemplative experience, while simultaneously inviting the viewer to become aware of and question the quiet truths about their embodied reality; the same screen, the same chair, the same room as experienced in a time of global social isolation.
